TARTE SHAPE TAPE CONCEALER

I never knew that my under eye area had such an impact on my overall complexion until I tried this concealer.  Once I put it on, my whole face looked instantly brighter and more flawless than ever before.

For years, I skipped using concealer under my eyes because I didn’t see the point. My go-to foundation, Estee Lauder Double Wear, is so pigmented and full coverage that any concealer I tried didn’t cover as well or stay on as long as my foundation.  So, instead, I would just bring my foundation up to cover the under eye area.

This was the case until I tried Tarte Shape Tape Concealer.  It is so unbelievably pigmented, lightweight, and most importantly it is a super long-wearing formula. When I apply this in addition to my foundation, my face looks instantly brighter and more polished.  To apply I use the rather large doe foot applicator that comes with the Shape Tape and dot two to three spots of concealer under each eye, then gently pat it to blend.  Then I blend a bit more with a concealer brush or with whatever I was using to apply foundation: either a Beauty Blender sponge or my favorite base brush (linked below).

When I first tried Tarte’s Shape Tape, I thought I would be the lightest neutral color called “Fair Neutral” and I saw that many others out there went with one of the lightest shades in the range, even if their complexions were darker than mine.  While the Fair Neutral shade looks like it should be a perfect match for me, I actually find myself gravitating towards the slightly darker Light Neutral shade more often.  The Fair Neutral looked almost a little too white on me, even though I know using lighter shades to highlight is all the rage these days.

In the two pictures above, I am wearing Fair Neutral on the right (where I am holding the concealer tube) and Light Neutral on the left. As you can see, there isn’t too much difference and both shades look pretty natural on me. As for picking between the two, I would say it just depends on what look you are going for and how pale you are.  If you are lighter than me (NC25 in MAC and currently between 1N1 and 2N1 in EL Double Wear) go for the Fair Neutral.  If you are looking to do some major sculpting with your concealer, the Fair Neutral might also be the way to go.  If you prefer to look a bit more sun kissed and natural, I would suggest the Light Neutral.

Here I am with no make up on the left and to the right, wearing only foundation and Tarte Shape Tape Concealer in Light Neutral. Please ignore my crazy looking eyebrows. I desperately need to make time to have them groomed and I don’t trust myself to do it.

Speaking of foundation, I’ve been hearing some very encouraging rumors that Tarte will be launching a new product in the very near future and I can’t help but hope for a Shape Tape Foundation.  While I am still very happy with my Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation (see my review here), I would love to test out a Tarte Shape Tape Foundation just to see if it is as pigmented and long wearing as the concealer.  A girl can dream, right?

**Update: Tarte did come out with a Shape Tape Foundation! Woohoo. Read my review here.

Here is my takeaway of Tarte Shape Tape Concealer

  • Easy to apply, fluid consistency, almost like foundation.
  • Applies equally well with a Beauty Blender or concealer brush.
  • Average length of time before it is set/ dry.
  • Superior pigmentation, perfect for covering significant under eye circles.
  • Very long wearing, easily lasting through a workday without fading.
  • Minimal creasing.
  • Plastic tube with a generous amount of concealer inside.
  • Unusually large doe-foot applicator included.

Tarte Shape Tape Concealer is currently offered in 14 shades and available exclusively through Ulta.  But, of course, you can purchase it on Tarte’s website too!

Oh, one more thing to mention here.  Shape Tape retails for about $27 USD, which might seem expensive at first glance. However, you get 0.33 oz, about 10 ml, which is a lot in the concealer world! For comparison, Maybelline Fit me is 0.23 oz (6.8 ml) and Urban Decay Naked Skin Complete Coverage Concealer is only 0.16 oz (5ml). So there you are: getting twice as much super high quality concealer for slightly less than other mid-range brands. Who knew you could be so flawless and financially responsible at the same time?
