If you’ve ever felt even the tiniest pang of guilt when using plastic wrap or aluminum foil to cover your leftovers or that big bowl of potato salad, then this earth-friendly DIY is perfect for you. The best part is, you only need a few items and about 15 minutes to make these stylish no-sew beeswax bowl covers.

What I love most about this beeswax food wrap is that you get to pick out the fabrics you like best, so the covers compliment your personal style and spark joy when you open your fridge. I never thought a simple lilac floral print would make me so happy at 7am, rummaging through the refrigerator, but I’m here to tell you that it does! These bowl covers are not only protecting my bowl of crumbled cotija cheese from the dreaded fridge air, but they are making my refrigerator shelves look like a quaint 1940’s ice box. Toss in some glass bottles of milk and you’re basically there.

These bowl covers are reusable, and rely on the warmth of your hands to meld the wrap to the rim of the bowl. It might take a few seconds longer than covering with disposibles like plastic wrap or aluminum foil but it’s usually worth it for me.

The caveat is, since beeswax does melt in hot temperatures, you can only wash these covers in cool water with a mild dish soap. For that reason, you cannot use these to cover meats, because the water temp won’t be hot enough to kill off that bacteria. But, that doesn’t bother me too much. I simply use an alternative when wrapping meats or anything particularly messy and reach for my lovely beeswax covers for everything else. At the end of the day, you are still reducing waste and saving a bit of money too!

Not only can you use these for bowls, you can cut the fabric to fit your favorite casserole dishes like this Fiesta 9×9 Baker I use constantly. You could even make a few more large squares (about 12”x12”) to use as beeswax food wrap to cover blocks of cheese or sandwhiches.

SUPPLIES

DIRECTIONS

  • Heat the oven to 200 degrees.
  • Find a plate or other circle shape that has a larger diameter than the bowl you plan to cover. You need at least an inch or two of extra material all the way around.
  • Using a pencil, trace the plate onto the back side of the fabric.
  • Cut out the shape with pinking shears.
  • Wrap the baking pan tightly with a few layers of foil to protect your baking sheet from the melted beeswax.
  • Place the cut fabric on the foil-lined sheet and sprinkle with the beewax until most (about 75%)  of the fabric is covered.
  • Put it in the oven and let it heat until the wax melts, about 5 minutes. Use your clean brush or spatula to evenly distribute the wax.
  • Allow to cool on wire racks or by hanging with clothes pins.

USE & CARE

  • To save space in your kitchen you can store these beeswax covers wrapped around the cardboard roll from paper towels or plastic wrap.
  • Use to cover any bowls, deep dish baking dishes, plates of cookies, or even blocks of cheese.
  • To seal on a bowl, firmly press and hold the wrap to the rim of the bowl, allowing your warmth to mold the wrap.
  • Avoid direct contact with meats or really messy foods.
  • Hand wash in cold water so that the wax becomes rigid and easy to clean. Wash gently with a soft cloth and mild, alcohol-free soap.
  • Do not wash your beeswax bowl covers in the dishwasher.
  • If the beeswax starts wearing off, bake again with more beeswax following directions above.

Overall I love how these turned out. The colors and patterns I picked are perfect for the Spring and Summer seasons we are entering, and I would totally recommend making a few special edition bowl covers for the Fall and Winter too.
