My Double Cleanse Routine + The Best Reusable Cleansing Cloths

I still clearly remember the life-changing conversation I had with an aesthetician about 10 years ago when she knowingly, and with great disdain, advised that I should be washing my face not once, but two times at night. First to remove makeup, spf, and oil, and the second to cleanse the skin. I stood there stunned, visions of clogged pores and dirty pillowcases swirling around me. How could I have been so reckless? Me, the girl who had started a multi-step skincare regimen at the tender age of 13, wasn’t washing my face properly!

Every day I would layer on full coverage foundation, several dustings of powder, and a powerful setting spray to cover up my uneven skin tone and ever-present blemishes- and then splash it with a pump of sudsy wash and some water and think that I was clean.

Now I know better. Since then I have been doing the double cleanse at night, once to remove makeup and another time to cleanse the skin. At first I would just use the same cleanse twice, but more recently I was introduced to the idea of an oil cleanser to really break down that stubborn long-wear makeup and I’m a total convert.

My favorite oil cleanser is actually a cleansing balm from Farmacy called Green Clean. It smells delightful and quickly melts into my skin where I massage it for a minute before removing it all with a damp muslin cloth.

Then I follow up with another cleanser like my Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser, which lasts forever by the way. I’ve been working on the same bottle for the better part of a year now. Another cleanser I reach for during the second cleanse is the Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser.

In particular I’ve been trying to stay away from foaming cleansers, which I’ve learned can do more harm than good, especially for problematic skin like mine. Overall, my skin now feels light and refreshed after my nighttime cleanse, not congested and dry like it used to.

Oh, and that damp muslin cloth I mentioned earlier? Amazing. I get mine in a pack of ten from Amazon and they do a great job of removing the cleansing oils and balms, along with every trace of dirt and makeup from the day. I keep mine folded up into squares because I think they are easier to handle that way. Then I toss them in the washing machine with the rest of my towels and wash in hot water. They come out fresh and clean every time, ready for another week of double cleansing.
