For many, many years J.Crew has offered what they boldly named The Perfect Shirt, a button up shirt that, according to them, fits perfectly. I’m here to tell you that The Perfect Shirt has lived up to its name and will probably be the only shirt I buy when it comes to button up shirts.
Let me take you back. Way back to my teenage years, when “oxford shirts” as we called them, were all the rage right along with polo shirts. The problem for me was that I could never find a button up shirt that fit me! Same with cardigans, but I’ll save that story for another day. Bottom line: there was serious gapping between the buttons on my chest.
“Get a bigger size,” you might say. And I did, but the sleeves and waist would be too baggy. Then one faithful day, a year or two into my corporate career, I ordered a J.Crew Perfect Shirt in a seasonal color that was on clearance for less than $20. Minutes after opening the shipping package and trying it on, I was back on their website putting a few more in my basket. It fit that well.
The big revelation for me was ordering their Perfect Shirt in size TALL. The sleeves were actually long enough, another major issue I always had with button ups. It’s not just that they are several inches too short on standard shirts, but the smaller wrist band area of the sleeve was sitting up higher on the meatier part of my arm, meaning it was a snug fit that would barely button.
With The Perfect Shirt, I no longer experience that wretched gapping that happens around the bust either, which I am assuming it a combination of them using fit models that actually have a chest and that the tall size takes into account where my chest and natural waistline hit, which is different from average sized women.
Needless to say, I am a huge fan of the J.Crew Perfect Shirt and I urge you to try it out if you, like me, have never found a button up that fit you well.
