A great craft project for kids parties, these delightful little fairy houses are made from simple unfinished craft birdhouses and decorated with moss, flowers, and other embellishments to make magical fairy homes.
For my daughter’s first birthday party I loosely planned around a Flower Fairy theme. That is to say, I didn’t want to put in a whole lot of effort decorating with expensive one-time-use party decorations. So, instead I reserved a quiet wooded park for her party and let the beauty of nature serve as the majority of our decorations. We hung a few paper flowers on a gazebo and had some lovely wooden cake stands and flowers on the food table to round out the theme.
Yeah, yeah, get to the part about the fairy houses lady!
Well, what really brought the whole concept together was the Fairy House craft I had planned, which turned out to be one of the highlights of the day. Both kids and adults had a blast decorating these little fairy houses made of those unfinished bird houses you can pick up from the craft store for a song.
THE BIRDHOUSES
Since I was purchasing quite a few for our party guests, I shopped around for the best deal, which I found in store at our local Walmart for less than a $1 each. I’ve also known Michaels and Joann craft stores to carry inexpensive unfinished bird houses as well.
If you aren’t having any luck in person, you can look to purchase little birdhouses online, however they are a bit more expensive. Here is a set that looks a lot like our birdhouses. Here is another set of craft birdhouses.
PAINT
For the decorations, I gathered up a bunch of my acrylic craft paint and some inexpensive craft paint brushes. For paint palettes, I almost always use small paper plates. Don’t forget a few cups of clean water to rinse the brushes.
GLITTER
Glitter is always a nice touch for kids crafts, especially when you are using it outside (amiright?). I went with rose gold and champaign glitter but any pretty colors will do. You could break out some Modpodge to help the glitter adhere, but watered down white school glue will also work. You can also just sprinkle some on wet paint.
FEATHERS, FLOWERS, BOWS
To really kick these houses up a notch, I got some gorgeous tiny paper flowers from Amazon. These are so good and I can see myself using these for another project in the future. My mom brought a stash of small ribbon flowers and ribbon bows from her private collection. And finally, I purchased these realistic brownish feathers, but you could totally go with white or colored feathers.
Don’t stop there though. You can use whatever embellishments you’d like. Buttons, jewels, tiny twigs from the yard, and acorns are a few more ideas. And what about these gorgeous faux butterflies?!
MOSS
The moss is where I went all out for these fairy houses, because it’s what makes them authentic fairy houses where fairies actually live. Pretty sure.
So I picked up a few sheets of solid green moss to cut up into pieces and then this big pack of mixed mosses (love!).
GLUE
We glued everything on with Aleene’s Tacky Glue, which I found in tiny tubes for about 60 cents each at Walmart. This was strong enough to hold everything in place and worked well for this craft. Ordinarily I’m a hot glue kinda gal, but since we were outside and there were little kids involved, I stuck with this simple glue.
SCISSORS
You always need scissors at a party, especially when there is a craft involved! Put out a few pairs if you can spare them.
ASSEMBLING THE HOUSES
For the party, I just laid all of the supplies out on a picnic table and let guests have at it. The craft is pretty self-explanatory and guests had fun being creative.
I would recommend painting the houses first if you will be using paint for yours. Then, add on glitter if using. Finally, glue on moss on the roof of the house (mandatory!!) and whatever else you want it. For a few finishing touches, glue on some feathers, ribbons, sticks, leaves, or whatever else you’d like.
If you want to protect your table, lay down an inexpensive tablecloth or have everyone make their fairy house on top of a large paper plate.
We had a great time makings these lovely fairy crafts and even the boys made some cool houses too. This turned out to be a great party craft, because people just knew how to put it together themselves, without a lot of effort or directions.
If not for a party, these could be a fun activity for you and your kids on a rainy day or a cool craft for a sleepover. Heck, you could even do this activity more than once and make a whole fairy village!
