SLOW COOKER SPICED APPLESAUCE

by Katelyn Masters

Having grown up in a area that was once the leading apple growing region in the nation, you could say I have an affinity for apples.  It was unwittingly ingrained in me from a young age that apples were tasty and wholesome and pretty darn versatile too.

One of my favorite treats back then, and still to this day, is apple butter.  And while this recipe is for Spiced Applesauce, the way it blends up silky smooth in my blender reminds me of a cross between apple butter and applesauce. In other words, delicious.  My toddler loves this applesauce too.  So much so, that I had to swat his little hands away from the cups filled with applesauce for the photoshoot.

SLOW COOKER SPICED APPLESAUCE

  • Total Time: 3 hours 5 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

This easy Spiced Applesauce is a healthy homemade treat that both kids and adults will love.

Scale

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs apples, any variety (i used gala and fuji)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon all spice
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons molasses (or maple syrup)

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and slice your apples. I use a device called an Apple Peeler Corer Slicer to make this easier.
  2. Place apple slices into a slow cooker and add spices, vanilla extract, and molasses.
  3. Cover and cook on high for 3 to 4 hours or until the apples are easily mashed.
  4. For chunkier, homestyle applesauce, mash with a fork or potato masher. For a smoother texture, puree with an immersion blender or in a blender or food processor.
  5. Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator until ready to eat.

Can you believe this is the fourth recipe I have posted this year in which I used an Apple Peeler Corer Slicer?! This handy, old-timey little contraption gets so much use in my kitchen and I highly recommend it to anyone who frequently cooks with apples. You just skewer the apple onto the arm of the device and turn the handle until the apple is completely peeled.  By that point it is also spiral sliced (like a slinky) and cored.  Then, all you need to do is cut it in half and it is ready for almost any apple recipe.
