I can still clearly recall the first time I coveted a pair of white jeans. It was 2004 and I saw them paired with a red halter on the cover of Lucky Magazine. I was obsessed. Soon after I too was a proud owner of a very nice pair of crisp white bootcut jeans, which, as I suspected went with nearly all of my summer wardrobe. Years later I still have that pair of jeans, along with several other pairs and I’ve learned a few tips along the way.
WARM WHITE
Choose a warm white over cool white for a more luxe look. How to tell the difference? Cool whites have a slightly bluer undertone and look cheaper in my opinion.
GO SOFTER
Look for a pair with a lower cotton content and added elastane or lycra so that the jeans are soft with just the right amount of stretch. These look more polished and flattering than stiffer denim. My current favorites and the ones I am wearing here are the Simone High Rise from Abercrombie. For reference they are 61% Cotton, 30% Viscose, 8% Polyester, 1% Elastane. What does that mean? Soft jeans, my friends.
SIZE UP
Of all of the white jeans I have purchased, I’ve had to size up one size in nearly every pair. Conspiracy? Optical illusion? I couldn’t possibly say. If buying online, carefully read through the reviews and consider buying one size larger than your normal size in that brand.
WINTER WHITES
Forget all of that “no white after labor day” nonsense. In the Winter and Spring pair white jeans with soft colors and neutrals like tan, white, grey or blush pink. As always, layering is the key to looking pulled together. Try layering a lacy camisole under a chunky knit sweater and adding a soft fuzzy scarf. A belt gives some emphasis to your jeans and makes the whole outfit look more intentional.
SUMMER BRIGHTS
During the Summer months go for a clean look by pairing a white top with white jeans. Add some contrast with colorful accessories or a rich tan belt and sandals. Another go-to combination for the warmer months is combining white jeans with a brightly colored top, especially one with a fun pattern!
STRAIGHT OR SKINNY JEANS
Pair white skinny jeans with a substantial shoe like an espadrille, chunky block heel, or bootie for a casual chic look or what I like to call “laidback luxe.” Go for a pointed toe- heels, flats, or even oxfords- to look a bit more dressed-up. If possible, avoid dark colored shoes which can make your legs looks shorter and instead go for neutrals or metallic.
FLARES
Flares are a personal favorite of mine and look good paired with strappy flat sandals or chunky heels in the summer months and ankle boots in colder weather. With flares, go for a more fitted top to balance things out so you aren’t drowning in material.
